making Microsoft Word my default word processor

I am having trouble making Word my default word processor. I read the
comments in this group and the instructions about changing the
settings under the "get info" panel make sense and work, but only for
the given file even though I click on "change all." Each time I open
the files I've already changed, they always open correctly, but other
files don't. I doubt that the solution is as tedious as changing the
information for every file on my computer; I just don't know what it
is. Any ideas? Oh, I'm working with Microsoft Office X.
