Making transparencies

I would like to make one .gif image transparent so I can lay it atop another.
Is this possible with Word or any other Office app?

On the Picture toolbar there is a Set Transparent Color tool. Click on that,
then click on the color you want to be transparent.

You can make individual colours transparent: select the graphic, select the
'Set transparent color' tool from the Picture toolbar, click the colour you
want to lose.

If you want to make the whole graphic semi-transparent you'll need to use a
graphics application.

Yes, I want the whole b&w drawing transparent. (It's the 2nd floor of a 2
story house.)

If it's B&W, then setting white as the transparent color should suffice.
