Making use of RES_HIRE_DATE field

Hello good people,

BACKGROUND:

Win Server 2003 sp2
WSS 3.0 sp1
MS Project Server 2007

I'd like to make use of the RES_HIRE_DATE field in the MSP_RESOURCES table
in the 'Published' database, so I can run queries and perform an action based
on the date that a resource was hired. I have not found any way to set the
value in this field through PWA directly. I'm sure I could customize an
interface that would allow our resource managers to enter this data, but is
that really a good idea? Is there a better way to accomplish this using
PWA's custom field definitions?

How is this field typically used in a Project environment?

I don't remember ever seeing that field before so it may well be a custom
field.

One way to read custom fields is to read the reporting database (not
recommended to use any of the other dbs) and for Resources see the View:
MSP_EpmResource_UserView

It has all Resource custom fields appended to its end.
