We have a new Hewlett Packard (Hpze5470us) lap top with
windows XP.

We want to install Office 97. Using the same disk we had
used in our previous Hewlett Packard (HPzt1170 with XP)
resulted in problems with page set up.

Word seems OK except for page set up and margen
problems. The default page size and margens do not
function and some old files loose their alignment in the
new computer.

At turn on, the page opens in "Normal" view (rather than
Page Layout). Page Set Up does not function. Page size
says 8 wide and 1 high in portrate and in landscape. The
margens shown are 1", 1", 1", 1", and trying to change
them only makes them go to zero (i.e., not up).
Initially, the "preview" page size looks normal but upon
trying to change the numbers it goes to a vertical or
horizontal bar.

I tried using some of the other temmplates under File,
New (Letters, Faxes, Memos etc.) and found the same
problem.

Under tools, Templates and Add-Ins, the template line
shows the letter "n" (highlighted in blue) only. I tried
a bunch of things including typing in Normal.dot but that
did not work. I tried to add a global template but
clicking OK resulted in an error message This template
does not exist.

As near as I can tell at this time, these functions seem
to work for Power Point and Excel etc. with regard to
margens and pages.

Does this sound like somthing MS would have a fix for or
it it unique? Does it sould like a computer problem?
Should I contact HP? We can't understand why these
things worked in the previous computer and not in the new
one.

We first noticed the problem when we tried to transfer a
single file to the new computer and lost alignment. I
tried a 3.5 floppy and a CD to make the transfer. They
both read back OK in the previous computer but loose
alignment in the new one. We uninstalled and reinstalled
Office 97 in the new computer but have the same problem.

I am sending this from the "previous" computer.

Hi Daniel,

If you have a template named N.dot (use Start=>Search
to locate it) in the add-ins you may want to remove
it and check for viruses on the PC, just to be safe.

In File=>Print have you selected a printer other
than 'generic/text'? Word's document layout makes
use of the information for the currently selected
printer driver, different drivers, even on the same
printer can show some variations but not usually
an 8" x 1" document.

Word generally opens a document in the same view
that was last used when it was saved.

Have you installed Office 97 updates from
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads on the
new computer after installing Office 97?
