Managed and Non-Managed Periods

Andrea

I am having a major quagmire. This client is tracking
hours in some project plans and % complete in others. The
default in PWA is set at % complete and then the plans
tracking hours are being changed through Proj Pro(
Tools>Customize>Published Field> Always Use A Specific
Method of Progress> Hours of Work Done per Time Period.

They are trying to approve timesheets, however, a message
is being received staying that we need Project Pro 2003 to
perform this action along with some additional verbage
about the server admin checking the Project Server Account
set up, etc. Ok--then we go and check the Global
Permissions on the Server Configuration page of PWA and
verify that the permissions for timesheet approval are set
to "allow"---then we go to save the changes and we get
another message--which states the " YOU CANNOT TURN ON
TIMESHEET APPROVAL UNLESS YOUR TIME PERIOD IS SET TO
MANAGED PERIODS. TO DO THIS GO TO THE ADMIN CENTER AND
CLICK CUSTOMIZE PWA".

Well---I can't use Managed Periods because then I lose the
option to choose a different tracking setting for
reporting progress on tasks --and locks down the default
to force managers to use the default reporting method only.

Ok--did I lose you, confuse you, or both.( Thank you
in advance!!!!

Because of the restrictive nature of the managed time periods feature in
Project Server 2003, and because of your need to track some projects using
the % Work Complete method, I would suggest that you not attempt to use the
managed time periods feature at all. Instead, I believe that you should
address the need for approving timesheets as a training and performance
issue. Train your people how to use the timesheet system correctly and then
expect your managers to enforce the performance of this vital function.
Hope this helps.

Dale,

Thank you for your response. I was so stressed when I sent
the initial post I didn't really ask my question--I gave
you the "highlights". My question is---Is it possible to
approve timesheets when using non-managed periods? I am
thinking that I may not have to appropriate Global setting
on the Server Configuration page in PWA--When I trying to
set the time sheet approval related boxes--I get the
message that states " I have to use managed periods" and
managed periods is not an option here--so how can they
approve time for non managed periods?

Sincerely,
Andrea

Timesheet approval is meant to be used with managed time periods. I am not
aware of any way to use timesheet approval without also using managed time
periods. Sorry.
