managed timeperiods

I'm using MS Project 2003 and PS 2003....and managed timeperiods. I have a
situation where I want to "reset" the protected data. Can I set to non
managed periods, make ajustments in the project schedule, publish, then set
back to managed periods? What are the risks in this? what are the tricks?

Depending on what you mean by "reset the protected data", you might consider
using the Adjust Actuals feature. Just a thought. Hope this helps.

good question Dale. I'm

A task had an original finish date of 9/28. I increased the duration of the
task so the finish date is now 10/31. I noticed that the assignment finish
stayed at 9/28. So I went into the task usage view and changed the assignment
finish to 10/31 also. I get the warning that this has made actuals out of
sync with protected actuals. How can I change the assignment duration to
10/31 and have it stick?

I can see in the finish date as 9/28 in Adjust Actuals...can I change the
finish date in Adjust Actuals?

My ultimate goal is to understand why the assignment finish date didn't
change when the task finish date changed...so I can change my process.

My immediate goal is to change the assignment finish date to 10/31 so it
matches the task finish date of 10/31. does this make sense?

Did the resource assigned to this task finish his/her work on the task
before you extended it?

Dale, correct, the resource assigned used all the allocated hours...but the
task was not complete. I added to the duration to finish the task 5 weeks
later. If I change the finish for the assignment and add hours....it always
comes back eventually as "out of sync with protected actuals". How can I
avoid this in the future...and how can I fix now?

Ask the team member to increase the Remaining Work for this task on his/her
PWA timesheet to add 5 weeks of work to the task. Hope this helps.

Thanks Dale. On this particular task, I'm the resource assigned. I'm not
completely clear on the process though.

- I added 160 hours to remaining work in my PWA timesheet for this task
- updated the selected row in my PWA timesheet
- approved and submitted the update as the PM
- the project schedule was updated with 160 additional hours to this task
for the resource assignment
- the task still finishes on 10/31...and the assignment still finishes on 9/28
- in the project schedule, task usage, I changed the resource assignment to
finish on 10/31
- in project I published all information
- in the project I did tools | tracking | sync to protected actuals....and
the resource assignment finish went back to 9/28.

What am I doing wrong? How can I make the protected actual for the resource
assignment finish 10/31?

At this point, I don't understand why you are worrying about this situation.
Won't this situation resolve itself when you finish entering actuals on the
task?

Dale, certainly a good question. We're attempting to load our projects with
resource assignment hours and level resources in an attempt to forecast where
it appears we won't have enough resources so we can set expectations
accordingly. If a task continues for another 5 weeks but I'm unable to load
hours for the resource assignment for another 5 weeks then I'm unable to
forecast with any degree of accuracy. This example is not an isolated
one....I have multiple tasks on multiple projects where the task finsih <> to
the resource assignment finish.

Updating tasks with timesheets will change assignment profiles for
remaining work and may result in a disconnect between task finish date
and the assignment finish date. These are independent values, though
initially assignment is based on task dates. There are several ways to
adjust the data (i.e. replanning), either by changing assignment end
date on the resource
work form or modifing remaining work profile in task usage view. You
need to ensure the changes do not change actual work values otherwise
you will have to resynch which may impact the changes you made.
