Managed versus non-Managed time periods (2003 versus 2007)

Hi,

I am looking for help to ascertain the diferences between 2003 and 2007 with
respect to the feature Managed versus Non-Managed time periods configuration?

If I recall correctly, in 2003 this configuation defaulted to Managed time
periods. In 2007 it seems to be the reverse. Is this correct correct?

Also, if you wished to change to non-Managed time periods in 2003 you would
go to Admin > Customize Project Web Access; and one had to enure that disable
(deny) Aprprove Timesheets and Approve Timesheets for Resources and Timesheet
Approval in order to make the change.

1) Where does one go to switch from managed to non-manged in 2007? Is
it in within Server Settings > Timesheet Periods, where you can create time
periods and set them to "close" instead of the "open" default?

2) Are there changes in security settings that need to changed in
version 2007 like those described above in 2003?

Yes, you can still use Managed Time Periods in Project Server 2007. To set
this up, complete the following steps:

1. Log into PWA with administrator permissions.
2. Click the Server Settings link in the Quick Launch menu.
3. Click the Task Settings and Display in the Time and Task Management
section of the page.
4. Select the "Hours of Work Done Per Period" option.
5. Select the "Resources should report their hours worked every day"
option.
6. Select the "Restrict updates to Project Web Access" option (this enables
Managed Time Periods).
7. Click the Save button.

You will also need to modify the My Tasks web part to display the daily
timesheet grid in the My Tasks page. To do this, complete the following
steps:

1. Navigate to the My Tasks page.
2. Click the Site Actions pick list (upper right corner of the page) and
select the Edit Page item on the list.
3. In the upper right corner of the My Tasks web part, click the Edit pick
list and select the Modify Shared Web Part item.
4. In the sidepane on the right, expand the Project Web Access section (at
the bottom of the sidepane).
5. Select the "Show only current tasks *" option and the "Hours per day"
option.
6. Set the Work Format value to Hours.
7. Click the OK button.
8. Click the Exit Edit Mode button immediately below the Site Actions pick
list (DO NOT click the X button for the My Tasks web part!).

You can set up your Time Periods and specify them as open or closed by
navigating to the Server Settings page and clicking the Timesheet Periods
link. Beyond this, I would also recommend that you edit the My Assignments
view (the real name of the My Tasks page) to include the Remaining Work
column. Hope this helps.

Fantastic! OK, one last one. What if I want to hide some of these tasks
that display? I notice I only have delete in the Actions menus. When I
select it it says: 'previously deleted tasks will be removed; otherwise,
deleted requests will be sent to the task owner'. What does this mean?

Users cannot hide tasks in Project Server 2007. This is a different
behavior than in Project Server 2003. Users should NOT delete tasks from
their My Tasks page. If they do so, and their PM is in a big hurry to
approve task updates and actually approves the Delete Assignment Request,
Project Server 2007 will REMOVE the resource from the assigned task in the
Microsoft project plan. By the way, this issue is discussed in our Managing
Enterprise Projects... book. The book is available for purchase at:

Hope this helps.

Are there any setting that would enable row and column totals for this daily
timesheet grid?

If not, I'm wondering on what platform and what kind of software developer
expertise I would need to find to have this coded?

I set the option "Hours per day", but the daily grid begins with Friday. I
changing it by choosing the setting within "Task Settings and Display" within
the "Time and Task Management " section of Server Settings to Sunday, but it
doesn't change from the weeks starting on Fridays!

Any ideas?

If you have not applied the Infrastructure Update, the timesheet grid on the
My Tasks page centers the current day in the middle of the grid. Would that
explain why you see Friday? If you apply the Infrastructure Update, the
system starts the timesheet grid with the day selected in the Task Settings
and Display page. Hope this helps.
