Manually create a WSS subsite

Newbie

Hello
Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services subsites are not created automatically
when you publish projects to Microsoft Office Project Server 2003.
How to manually create a Windows SharePoint Services subsite ?

Thanks

I presume you mean any WSS sub-site not one connected in some way to
Projects.

This is an answer from someone running WSS but should apply to you too.

It's created by using Create in the menu line (direct link
http://wsswebsite/_layouts/1033/create.aspx) followed by (at the bottom of
the page) "Sites and Workspace" when the type of template you choose will
determine whether you are creating sub-site (to the site you are in) or a
Document/Meeting Workspace.

To Manually create sites for Project Server, you should do this in Project
Server Administration. In PWA navigate to Admin > Manage Windows SharePoint
Services > Manage Windows SharePoint Sites. I think you can take it from
there.

Gary,

This reply actually helped me out as well. I have one Project that I
published that didn't automatically create a Sharepoint site. I went to the
location you suggested below and see it - and also see that there isn't a
site listed for it in the Site Address column. So I highlight it and click
Create Site. I get the error: "Error occurred when creating site. Site does
not seem to exit."

Well the Project does exist and we are putting time against it. Any
suggestions?

Hi Steve,

Can you access the Project site directly?

For example, if you Project ID is 104, open IE and try to access the
site by typing the following in the Address:

http://<WSS Server>/sites/projectserver_104

Rolly,

Nope, I get the standard, "The page cannot be found" error. Any other ideas?
Thanks for the help.

Ok Steve,

Let's try it from a different approach...
If PWA doesn't want to create the Project site, then let's create the
Project site from WSS :)

From the WSS Server
1. Click Start --> Programs --> Administrative Tools -->SharePoint
Central Administration.
2. From the Central Administration page, click Configure virtual server
settings.
3. From the Virtual Server List, click on the Name of the WSS server
created in IIS. (It should display the version number like 6.0.2.5530)
4. From the Virtual Server Settings page, under the Virtual Server
Management heading, click Create top-level Web site.
5. From the Create Top-level Web Site page, fill in the following
settings:

Web Site Address --> Create site under this URL:
URL Name: type projectserver_<projectID> (where <projectID> =
the ID number of the project that didn't create the
Project site. For example, projectserver_104

Site Collection Owner & Secondary Owner:
User Name: Type the logon credentials of the owner
(Administrator)
E-mail Address: Type the e-mail address of the owner

Leave everything else as default, and click OK.

6. From the Top Site Successfully Created page, click on the hyperlink
of the site. A new IE window opens
7. At the Template Selection page, select Project Workspace and click
OK.
8. Launch PWA --> Admin --> Manage Windows SharePoint Services -->
Manage SharePoint Sites.
9. Click on the Project ID (with the missing Project site) and click
Edit Site Address.
10. In the Edit Site Address page, type projectserver_<projectID> and
click OK.
11. At the warning message, click OK.
12. At the Manage Windows SharePoint Services sites page, click on the
new site address link.

You'll need to change the name of the site from Project Workspace to the
name of the project, but for the most part you're done :)

Good Luck and let us know what happens

Cheers,

Thanks. That seems to have worked. I wouldn't want to do that every time but
it worked here. Let's hope it automatically creates them from here on out.

Thanks again.

If you entered a URL for the SharePoint Extranet site and used "/projects"
on the end the way the example on the page shows, it will prevent the sites
from being created automatically. Either remove the Extranet URL completely
or change it to "/sites" like the URL right above it. It's an error on the
page sample.
