MAPI Error 0x80040107 importing over existing contacts (Outlook 2003)

I've managed to export all of my contacts to an excel spreadsheet and
updated all of the information in a mass change.
all I changed was phone numbers in the contacts.

When I try to import them back, I get the MAPI error listed above.

if I import them as new contacts into a separate folder, they come in clean,
but have messed up e-mail addresses

Help!!
