MAPI32.DLL is corrupt

I have been using Outlook 2003 since 2003. A few weeks ago,
I tried to install the update to add holidays for 2008 and beyond. The
update did not install. I tried again yesterday and I found a message
that said that the problem may be that the old holiday file needed to be
renamed holiday.old. I did that. After that I tried to install the
update again and still could not do so, but every time I went to check
my email I got a "preparing to install" message. Today, when I came
into work, I tried to open Outlook and it gave me a message that said
"cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the
wrong version. This could have been caused by installing other
messaging software. Please reinstall Outlook." I tried to reinstall it
using the second disk of my office disks. After it finished, i tried to
open, but got the same message again. I tried restarting my computer and
that did not help. I tried using the search feature to see which files
had been modified yesterday, but the search window opens and then I get
a message that says "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Briefly before
message appears, I see the "preparing to install" message again. I don't
know what else to try.
