? mark in Duration

I know this is a stupid question, but why do the ? marks show up in a
duration? How can I get them to default to not showing up? How do I remove
exisiting ones. I have just taken over a file from a client tha tis filled
with them and Im on a time contraint.
I knowits some simple function that I am overlooking

As Jack said ... but you really don't need to worry about it except for
cosmetics. They have no effect what so ever on the actual scheduling
process or calculations. They really are just a handy flag to give you a
reminder that you need to take a look at the duration of those tasks before
you finalize the schedule. If you have a project with hundreds of tasks it
can be handy to have something to help you make sure some of them don't fall
through the cracks without having their durations examined. I do wish MS
had chosen a different name for the flag though - by definition ALL duration
figures are estimates until you go out and actually do the work, not just
those still showing the initial default value. Think of the question mark
as really meaning "duration estimate required."
