Mark text as caption

Is there a keyboard shortcuts to automatically mark text
as a caption? Like Alt-Shift-O to mark text for the Table
of Contents or Alt-Shift-X to mark text for an Index? I
can't seem to find one in the list of keyboard shortcuts.

You can use the Caption feature to create captions (Word 97, 2000:
Insert > Caption, Word 2002, 2003: Insert > Reference > Caption). Or
you can use a specific (numbered) paragraph style.

Regardless of the method you choose, you can then use the Index and
Tables dialog box to create a table of figures. Click the Table of
Figures tab and make your selections. For specific instructions for
your Word version, see Word Help.

Thanks for the info. I am trying to find a keyboard
shortcut for "marking" existing text as a caption (like a
TOC entry - Alt-Shift-X). At this point, I am having to
go into Insert/Caption and cut and paste the existing
caption text into the caption box. Just thought there
might be an easier way.

I can't imagine there is a predifined Shortcut for what you desire.

Insert | Caption is intended to add a caption *to* something you have
selected beforehand (or at the cursor position). I'm sure you can put
together a macro and assign a shortcut to it, but you're better off in
the .vba group for that (read: although there certainly *are* folks in
here for who this is a piece of cake, I'm not one of them, and it would
be more on-topic in the other group :)).
