Marking messages as unread

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

When someone sends me an email it shows up as unread in my webmail account. As soon as I hit send and receive in my 2008 Entourage client and downloads that same email it marks the email as read on my webmail account. In the 2004 client this didn't happen.
