In Word 2008, I can highlight a single word or a paragraph, but cannot select a string of words to copy or delete. This is a very limiting feature. Is there a setting that allows selecting text by highlighting by dragging the mouse?

If you can select a word or paragraph there should be no problem selecting
anything else. What *does* happen when you try?

Rather than dragging try these other methods:

1- Click in one spot then hold down Shift while you click someplace elese
2- Hold Shift+Option while pressing left or right arrow several times
3- Hold Command while you click in a sentence

What happens in each instance?

What happens if you Quit Word, restart the Mac, then try again?
