Master Document in Word 2000

Ok I have just about finished writing a book in about 8
files, each file a chapter. I am trying to get it out for
my students in September (Kinkos). I was thinking of using
Master Document in Word 2000. I know that this feature was
so buggy in Word 97 that it had to be avoided. Is it
working now? I have mechanically set the page number for
each file so that it runs consecutively as a book. It
seems much better to use Master Document. I would
appreciate any advice you can give me. Here are some
specific questions.
1. I have set the beginning page number of each file so
that it prints all the way up to page 320. Will Master
Document override that? If not, how do I set page number
so that Master Document controls it?
2. If I index, do I just provide a list of terms I want it
to index in the book and turn that over to Master Document
to then do the indexing?
3. Ideally each chapter would behgin on the right hand
side of teh page, that is on an odd number. I have tried
to control that mechanically by adding a blank page so
that each chapter ends on an even number. Can Master
Document control that?
4. Am I an idiot for attempting to use Master Document? Is
there a good help chapter, book somewhere?
Thanks

Before you consider using a Master Document, see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/WhyMasterDocsCorrupt.htm. Then note
that 320 pages is not a very large document. You should be easily able to
handle this as a single file, and that is much the easiest way to approach
it. If you want to keep it as separate files but need to generate a TOC
and/or index, look in Word's Help under "Field codes: RD (Referenced
Document) field."
