Master document loses links to sub-documents

I've had a problem with a couple of master docs.
I start a new doc and set up the title, headings and sub
headings and then convert it to a master document. Every
thing is ok at this point and I can work on the sub docs
etc. and saving as I go. I can open the master doc up
again the next day (still ok) but another time I can open
the master doc up and all the sub doc are missing except
for the title of the document and a whole string
of 'continuous line breaks' without anything in between.

Where have the links etc. gone? The sub doc files are all
there as I saved them (in the same folder as the master
doc) but do not show up in the master doc. I have to then
re import the docs into the master doc. Then everything is
fine for a few days and then it goes again.

"Master Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not
only doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with the
limited exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these
newsgroups is that using the Master Document feature is a sure way to
destroy your document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are
not even working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said
that there are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and
