Master Document Replacement

I have been struggling to find a replacement for Master documents as s
many experts warn against using them. But what are the alternatives?

My primary use is for the creation of training programmes. I intend t
have individual documents for specific content, thus providing maximu
flexibility and allowing a wide variety of bespoke courses to b
created quickly.

If it is simply a matter of inserting files, are there any utilitie
to make this easier and ensure correct numbering etc?
Does the tech-TAV approach work in Word 2003 or is it worth switchin
to WordPro.
Or are there other options?

TIA
