Master Documents

I got a question from an associate regarding a master document she is working
on with 6 subdocuments. One of the subdocuments is locked. This document
was created in Word 2003 and we now use Office 2007. Neither of us can
figure out how to unlock it, and there seems to be no mention of
Master/Subdocuments int Word 2007 help.
Can anyone offer any advice?
