Master files with numbering problems

L

Lixin Tang @UNSW

Dear all:

I am working on 8 slave documents and later put all of them into a master
document. When I put them together, the number system (heading 2 and heading
3) are totally wrong. I tried to edit them in the master file, but it didn't
work.

I got no idea and hope to get some help.

The general advice on fixing numbering problems in Word is
the following:

1. Make sure that your numbering is setup according to the
instructions at:

www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

2. Use CTRL+Q to remove direct formatting (such as manual
restarts) from numbered paragraphs.

3. If you are using Track Changes, make sure that you
accept all changes.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The master document feature of Word is
buggy. It actually causes corruption. For more
information, see:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/WhyMasterDocsCorrupt.htm

The good news is that it usually works fine to keep an
entire text as a single file, assuming that your computer
has sufficient amount of RAM.
