Master layout page for all the child pages in the link

K

Hello guys,

I started a small website but its growing out of proportion to my
expectations !

As a result, if I want to make a change for a COMMON LAYOUT which repeats in
all the child pages or for that matter in the whole web - I am finding myself
changing the layouts INDIVIDUALY in all the pages. Its gets very very tedius
just to make one small change.

I tried to find out from help if there is any solution to my problem i.e -
If I change the layout in master page - automatically all the child pages
gets updated just like the link bars based on navigation.

For example - I have a portifolio called Tea & Sympathy -

http://www.kentheteaman.com/tea_&_sympathy.htm

I wanted to add Amazon.com search box to all the pages in that portifolio. I
had to add it individualy to all the child pages. Took me more than one hour
to update every page.

So my question is -

1. Is there a facility in FP where I can nominate one page as master layout
page so that any change in it will all so appear in child pages?

2. Is there any other soulution to my problem....?

Create an "include" page that contains just the navigation and then include it in all of your pages.

Here's a simple example. The left navigation panel on this page is an include page:
http://www.95isalive.com/

the include page is this:
http://www.95isalive.com/nav.htm

Rob,

Thank you for the info.

First of all, the virus bit. I am not sure what is going on there. It seems
fine when I download the page.

Next, Regarding using a "model" page - Thats what I am doing right now. But
my problem is - the site is continously evolving and needs change frequently.

In that scenario, if I want a change which needed to be applied in all the
pages, ex - addition of Amazon search box, I have to go through every one of
the pages to correct it. Thats when you have around 400 pages in your site -
Tast is enormous.

I need a "MASTER PAGE" - When I make changes to it - all the child pages
will get updated as well.

Is there anything available ?

regards,
ken.

You would need to upgrade to FP2003 and re-do your site using one or more Dynamic Web Templates.

You only option currently, which still requires you to edit each page now, but thereafter you would
just change a single page, is to use the FP Include Page component or if you are using a theme,
insert this item into one of the shared borders. As long as the Amazon Search Box doesn't use any
JavaScript, then it should work just fine.

The navigation table in the main page is the left cell in a table.

The navigation itself is the file named nav.htm

To use an include page, click in the area on the main page where you want to place the include
and then click Insert > Web Component and then select "Included content" and then browse to the
include page. In this case nav.htm

When you save the page the content between the <body> </body> tags is in nav.htm is automatically
"included" in the page(s) that you've added the include page to.

To change the navigation, simply edit the include page and save it. When you save it, all pages
that use the include page ( nav.htm ) are automatically updated by FrontPage.

Then publish.

Hi Steve,

Thank you so much. I think I got the idea.

Now, a new problem ! It only works partially !!!

I included the pages (two in total) in to the current page. Included them in
two separte tables, one for each page.

First page is for the left side navigation links and google ads. The 2nd
page inclusion is for the bottom of the page where there are links to
Amazon.com search and my own site's links.

When I preview the page with in the FP after inclusion - it looks fine. But
when I preview in a browser - only the bottom links show up. The left side
links do not.

I thought if I publish - it will be ok. But no, still the left side links do
not show up at all.

Here is the link to the published "master page" -

http://www.kentheteaman.com/master_page.htm

If you can give me your email - I can send all the 3 pages to you to have a
look at. Thats if you do not mind.

Thank you once again.

regards,
ken.

The include page that is not being displayed is missing the base set of HTML tags:

<HTML>
<TITLE></TITLE>
<HEAD>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
your content to be included in other pages, including any JavaScript functions that would normally
be in the head section of a page.
</BODY>
</HTML>

navigation link bar problems Also. Have three levels of pages. When I try
to program link bars for "same level" on one level, the links are deleted on
the home page, which I want to have "child links." I have done this over and
over, and have tried to change individual pages and save them, but again I am
missing something important.

Learning to manage your navigation structure manually and not relying on the FP navigation
components will give you more flexibility in the long term, along with using the FP Include Page
component.

Thanks for fast reply. I THOUGHT I was managing manually, setting each page,
but nothing stays permanently. Can you give me some steps. I seem to be
able to successfully set up pages, but am going around in circles with this
and with the subsite. (other posts) Can you give me some more detail with
how to set up navigation manually. I can work in the navigation page and
move pages around, I can create custom links, but defaults must be set so
that I cannot keep parent/child and same/same.

T

Thomas A. Rowe

To manage you navigation structure manually, create a page, add your text or images that you want to
use as a link, then link each to there page, then you use the FP Include Page component to insert
this page into all your other pages. Thereafter, you would not long use or rely on the FP navigation
view.

Your filenames will cause problems in some browsers. The ampersand &
is a special character in URLs, being a querystring parameter
separator. It should not be used as part of a filename. Change
tea_&_sympathy.htm to tea_and_sympathy.htm
and likewise with any other files and folders that use "special"
characters.
The only characters that are safe to use in a file/folder name are
alphanumeric and the hyphen and underline a-zA-Z0-9-_
