when a sub project is inserted, it shows file name then follows by other
tasks in the sub project. how can the file name be hidden in the master
project?

Project does not display the filename in the inserted file. It displays
the text held in the "Title" file properties (Menu: File/Properties)
field of the inserted file.

I do not think there is away to "hide" this information in the master
file. Frankly, this is not something I ever wanted to do. However, for
you I experimented with using a filter to exclude rows with
[OutlineLevel]=1 and that did not work. Perhaps another cleaver filter
will work for you. Give it a try.

That being said, if you were to simply change the displayed text from
the file name to something more "project manager friendly", this would
achieve your need?

Rob,
Is a "cleaver filter" one that chops something off?
