MAT File Associations

I use MatLab which saves variables files as .mat. When I installed 2007 it
changed the associations from MatLab to Office 2007. I had to go into the
'Tools' 'Folder Options' 'File Types' to change the association back because
the right click option 'open with' did not appear.

The problem I have is the file maintained the small shortcut on its icon and
continues to open with Microsoft Access. It also hides the file extension
even though that option is off.

How do I remove this association/modification to be able to use the files?

I have reset my computer and recreated new files which still have this
problem.
I am using Office 2007 Pro Plus with SP1.

Hi,

Thanks, that link pointed me in the right direction.

I had to go into a folder and open the 'Tools' menu and select 'Folder
Options'.

I then had to choose 'New' and I typed in 'mat' for the file extension and
then clicked the 'Advanced' button.

This gave me a dropdown menu where I was able to choose MatLab and then I
hit 'OK'.

A prompt appeared telling me the file was still associated with the
Microsoft Access Tables (even though I had already disabled and changed it).
It asked if I wanted to remove the old extension and create a new one with
the new association. I clicked 'Yes'.

This solved all the problems. The file extensions again appeared and the
association was correct and the shortcut part of the icon was removed and the
it opened with the correct program.

Thanks again,
Justin

Dunno if this info about repairing broken file associations will help or

For a shortcut, you might right-click and choose Properties....
