Go under the Insert menu. Insert Symbol. That will open up a window of
all characters available to you in the current font.

If you need this often, you should be able to map the ones you need to
keystrokes under Tools > Customize Keyboard - though I'm a bit fuzzy on
the actual method. I'm sure someone will chime in.

In the International PrefPane, go to the Input method Tab. Make sure you
select to display the menu item and select the Character palette in the list.

After that, you should see a little flag in the Menu bar representing the
country of the keyboard layout you are using. Under that menu, you can select
Show character palette. The panel there allows you to find all sort of
characters and symbols, including the one you are looking for. You can then
insert them through either a double click or drag and drop,
This works for most apps on your Mac.

It does work, but I think it's a little unwieldy when Word allows you to
do the same thing without opening Prefs.

By the way, if you want it system-wide TypeIt4Me lets you assign symbols
to keyboard shortcuts that will work in any and all apps.

There are a couple of other ways indeed. You can use Insert Symbol from
within Word. or you can insert an equation (which I would stay away from for
something as trivial as a superior or equal to symbol.

I favor the character palette because 1) it's easy and 2) it works in all
apps.

Sure. Or SpellCatcher, Keyboard Maestro...
