Microsoft's equation editor might meet your need. I think it comes with
Office. If it's on your machine, it's in the "Object type" list for
Insert >> Object >> Create New
(To be honest, I haven't used this feature personally.)
For math symbols in isolation, try different fonts: Symbol or Wingding, for
example. One way to get different fonts is:
Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> System tools >> Character map
For a square root symbol look at the Symbol font in the sixth row of the
character map.
