Mathematics Symbols

Office is displaying all mathematics symbols completely incorrectly (as
things like smiley faces) in lecture notes which I download from my
University website. Why is this and how do I fix it?

Also, why has office update been saying it has technical difficulties for
weeks when I try to download new updates?

1) check the font the uni is using; make sure you also have it.
2) what's the EXACT error message.

It's not an error message - they just display as random symbols like CD's and
floppy discs.

It doesn't happen in typing - it's items that are displayed almost as a
picture - I assume they've been written using the equation editor, which I do
have installed but when I try to use it it also shows random symbols instead
of the correct ones.

Sounds more like a font problem rather than equation editor.
Are these Word or PowerPoint files?
At a computer lab try opening a file and saving it with the option With
Embedded Fonts
Now take it home at look at it.
If it works, politely tell prof how to do this
(I always (nearly always!) use this feature on my lecture notes)

duh...forgot about my own second question for a minute there.

The error error message on Offie Update is (after the bar has reached 96%)

"Office update is currently experiencing technical difficulties and cannot
search for updates please try again later." No error code or anything.

Yeah having experimented a bit more I agree it's a fonts problem...however,
if I go to insert>object>microsoft equation 3.0 then anything I put in comes
up as garbage symbols. Even = comes up as a curved horizontal line with a dot
above and a dot below. So the problem is my end and I can't make it go away -
even when I do reset to original settings it doesn't fix it.
