MATLAB eps images get messed up when imported

I do a lot of mathematical writing in Word. I often created mathematical
graphs in MATLAB, then import them into Word 2003 as .eps files. Once I had
the files in word, I would put the graphs in a drawing canvas and add
features to them. (Annotations and labels were easier to do in Word, and the
font would match that of my document.) There was never any trouble with the
onscreen image, or with the printed image.

I'm having trouble with this same scheme in Word 2007. The onscreen image
appears with some of the objects misaligned. In most cases, the printed image
is okay, but I have had some of them print with misaligned objects as well.
This is a problem because it is impossible to add features to the drawings
because the objects are in the wrong place.

I am surprised that Word seems to have automatically converted the onscreen
images to object-based drawings. (I can move the objects around) And, as I
have observed, the conversion has caused errors.

Is my interpretation of this correct? Does Word 2007 automatically convert
the onscreen images for the .eps files into object-based drawings? If so, is
there any way to get that to not happen, or is there any way to get it to
happen without errors?

If my interpretation is not correct, does anybody know what the problem is?

Thanks,
-Mark
