I have a client who got the following message:
"The full path of the file '...filename...' is too long. Please try using
the 'Map Network Drive' command to connect to the server to shorten the
path."
Very clear message. He has Office 2003 and got the pop-up from Word.
What's unclear is this:
1. The full pathname was in fact a UNC \\server\share\.... but was only
191 chars long. I thought max path defaulted to 256.
2. Other desktops running Office XP in the same domain, on the same LAN,
etc. do not experience the problem.
Mapping a drive did fix the problem. (Actually, there already was a drive.
I don't know why he was using the UNC.) But I need to understand the
problem because I suspect we're on the hairy edge of max_path or something
and the problem will no doubt re-surface with a vengence.
TIA for any insight.
