Maximizing windows

P

Peggy

When I open my Internet Explorer it opens minimized, using about 1/4-1/3 of my screen. The same thing is suddenly happening in Word and I have to maximize manually, so to speak. I haven't changed any settings and I can't think of any reason for this. I have Windows XP Home Edition on a laptop. HELP!

Try stretching the small window to full size. (Do not use Maximize)
Ensure that window is the last one closed and IE should remember the
size next time.

Hi Peggy,

Word should 'remember' the state of the application window when you exit. If you are exiting Word and the application window is maximized then you could be encountering some corruption in the Word\Data key in the Registry.

Exit Word and in the Registry navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\<ver>.0\Word\Data

and rename the Data key. Word will create a new one upon starting.

As always, prior to making any changes to the Registry you should review "Backing up the Registry" and "Restoring the Registry" in the Registry Help.

In this situation you may want to use the Registry/Export Registry file command, export your selected branch, and delete the key. That way if you find the change wasn't necessary or incorrect, you can merge the deleted branch back to the Registry by double-clicking the resulting file.
