maximum header length?

David Maddern

I am merging Word 2002 with an Excel 2002 data source from a 3rd party
program. I am running into issues with the length of the header name. It
seemd that for the headers that exceed 40 characters, the merge does not look
at the rest of the header. THus I am getting duplicate merges.

«EducationTraining_DegreeProgram__Name» should be
«EducationTraining_DegreeProgram__Name1»

Is this happening due to a maximum char length for a header?

Yes, there is definitely a maximum field name length of (around) 40
characters, after which Word will try to rename fields. There may be
additional constraints for some types of data source.
