Maximum number of chars in a cell?

D

David Thielen

Hi;

What is the largest number of characters I can have in a cell? This needs to
work in Excel 2000/2002/2003/2007 saving in XLSX/XLS/SpreadsheetML.

This is for data I save in a hidden sheet and it is a uuencoded string that
can be several hundred K long. I can break it over multiple cells if needed.

Hello Dave,

The maximum length of cell contents (text) is 32,767 characters. Only 1024
display in a cell; all 32767 display in the formula bar. This limitation
fits all versions of Office Excel.

For other limitations, see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264626/en-us for Office 2000
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/HP051992911033.aspx for Excel 2003
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/HP100738491033.aspx for Excel 2007

If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to let me
know.
