Maximum number of DDE links?

I'm having problems with an inherited file that calls data from
Bloomberg through an enormous amount of DDE links (just by using the
=blp function in the Excel add-in). At the moment, when the file is
opened and updated, it gets part way through and then stops updating,
which Bloomberg tells me is due to too many links.

My question is whether it is possible to code the update process and
get it to update in stages, perhaps sheet by sheet. I've done a little
VBA, so understand the basics, but not DDE links and can't get my head
around how to split up the update process (also have no documentation
on the Bloomberg related vba functions - does this exist?).

Any advice, or where I should look for documentation/examples would be
appreciated.

If you are going to spend time on this and are using Excel 2002 or above then
I strongly advise that you replace the DDE calls with RTD calls. Much more
efficient, stable and less likely to freeze up.
