Maximum Number of Mail Merge Fields

What is the maximum number of fields that can be displayed to select from for
mail merge?

From Word Help ("About data merge data sources"):

You can use the Data Merge Manager to create a Microsoft Word
data source with up to 63 data fields. If you need more than
63 fields, you can create the data source as a tab- or
comma-delimited text file or other data source.

How many could you possibly need? I know for a fact that there can be as
many as 256, but once you get beyond a certain number (25-30 I think, but I
don't know exactly what the number is) the Merge Fields area becomes a
button you can click to display a *list* rather than trying to display all
the fields in the palette.
