Mbox Folders on Network

C

Carl Weatherell

Hi - I am new to Mac and have converted all of my 3Gb of pst's to mbox
files. I have also managed to get them accessible as Entourage file
folders.

Is there any way to have these stored on a network drive but accessed as an
Entourage folder in a similar fashion as pst data files in Exchange?
I am running Entourage 8.

Thx

Carl ;-)

Hi Carl!

Entourage cannot access offline folders like Outlook can do with .pst files.

Please be sure to let Microsoft know you'd like to see this feature in
future versions by using the Help --> Send Feedback mechanism in any
Office application.

Hi Bill - I have it working with local files by simply dragging and dropping
the mbox folder to a new folder, so I guess you are telling me there is no
way to make that a network folder..

thx

Hi Carl!

I'm not quite sure what you have working but Entourage does not support
having a single file, such as a .pst file, that it can open within the
application as if it were a local mail folder. Entourage can import and
export items such as MBOX files but it cannot directly modify them.

Hope this helps!

HI Bill - I think I have confused you a bit... This is what I have done and
what I need:
- I converted pst folders (all 326 of them) to MBOX folders
- I created a new folder under "On My Computer" in Entourage
- I dragged and dropped the mbox folder into this new one
- I have read and write access to this mbox folder and can drop-and-drag
emails to and from this folder
- these reside on my hard drive and I need to have them backed up on the
corporate server, since I can't make a network folder under the "On My
Computer" folder in Entourage I need another solution
- is it possible to have a syncronized backup of this folder and all
subfolders?

Thx again and I hate to be a pest

Carl ;-)

Hi Carl!

I may still be confused by I'll keep plugging. :)

First, once the MBOX file has been dragged into Entourage, its messages
have been copied into Entourage's Database. You can delete the original
MBOX file from your computer if you wish. (I'm just trying to make sure
that you understand you're no longer using the MBOX file once its
messages are imported into Entourage.)

You only have a couple of options for backing up your messages. If
you're using an Exchange Server then you can drag the messages from the
folders "On My Computer" into folders under you Exchange account. This
will copy the messages to your Exchange account on the server. Or you
can periodically drag each mail folder from Entourage to your Desktop to
create a new MBOX file. Those can be manually copied to your server.

Exporting mail folders is scriptable in Entourage 2008 but I know of no
scripts that have been written to do this. Regardless, you'd still need
to copy the MBOX files to a server (manually or via script) after
exporting from Entourage.

Hope this helps!
