McAfee Virus Scan 5.1 incompatibility with Office 2000 update installer

Ian

I've been happily using McAfee Virus Scan 5.1 with Office
2000 but had not yet applied the most recent Office 2000
updates. After installing the new Office2000 update
installer, on restarting, I got a red cross style error
message: "Virusscan could not start due to missing or
outdated AVSYNCH.DLL library. Please re-install the
product." The error dialogue box was headed "C:\PROGRAM
FILES\MCAFEE\MCAFEE VIRUSSCAN\AVSYNMGR.EXE".

Any clues on whether this is really an incompatibility ?

Fair comment but they no longer support it. For the
benefit of any others with similar problems after trying
Office Update, here is a fix that I found at:
http://www.internal.schools.net.au/listserver/sina-
sa/msg05543.html

Problem: "VirusScan could not start due to missing or
outdated Avsynch.dll library. Please reinstall the
product."

Solution:
1. Open the registry with REGEDIT
2. Browse
to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Run Services"
3. Delete the "McAfeeVirusScanService" key
4. Browse
to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Run"
5. Delete the "McAfeeVirusScanService" key (if any)
6. Browse
to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Run Once"
7. Delete the "McAfeeVirusScanService" key (if any)
8. Close REGEDIT
9. Right-click the 'Start' button and select 'Open'
10. Double-click 'Programs' to open the Programs folder
11. Double-click 'Startup' to open the Startup folder
12. Right-click within the Startup folder and select 'New
| Shortcut'
13. In the "Create Shortcut" window click 'Browse'
14. Browse to "C:\Program Files\Network
Associates\VirusScan\AVSYNMGR.EXE"
15. Click 'Next'
16. Name the shortcut (e.g. VirusScan)
17. Click 'Finish'

It worked for me except that for AVSYNMGR.EXE I had to
browse to c:\program files\McAfee\McAfee
VirusScan\AVSYNMGR.EXE (instead of Network Associates).

Hope that helps someone,
Ian
