As differenct from a Paragraph Style, Character styles
only affect font attributes (e.g., bold, italic, etc.).
It sounds like you have your options (probably under
Tools>Edit but I am not at a Word2002 machine to verify)
set to keep track of formatting. This causes Word to
create new style definitions based on your directly
applied formatting. Meaning if you apply a bacic Heading
Style and then bold it, Word will create a new Heading
style will bold character formatting.
