Measuring strings in a shape.

Hi.
I encounter the following problem:
I have a shape with a defined width.
I have a text that should describe this shape. My problem is that I dont
know whether or wheather not the string's width fits the shape width.
For example:
The shape's width is 3 cm. The font of the text in the shape is 6 pt. size
and the text is "Do I fit the shape?".
My problem is that I want to know if the entire text's size is bigger then 3
cm. If this is the case, I need to know how many characters from it will fit
so to truncate it.
