Memory full-problem

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

Also after the update (12.0.1) Word often (most of the times actually) eats all of my memory. This happens when I have two documents open (I need to have more docs open most of the time), but it might also be with just one.
Somebody else experiencing this after the update? What to do?

To offer any ideas we need more detailed information:

What do you mean "eats" all of your memory - how are you determining this?

How much RAM does your Mac have?

What type of content is in the documents... Pictures, tables?

How many fonts are installed & do you have WYSIWYG turned on?

Are you using Track Changes?

Thank you for the reply. It happens both on my MacBook with 1GB and on my iMac with 2GB. I only have the standard fonts installed and WYSIWYG turned on. There are no pictures or tables in the the doc, but I have a suspicion that it might have to do with the spell-check. I'm using several docs with multiple languages, and I have the spell-check turned off for the footnotes.
I'm determining the complete usage of all the memory with Activity Monitor. Whenever "it" happens, all the free memory is gone.

Finally, the crash always happens after having opened the docs for a few hours.

Yeah, there's a bug open at the moment on a memory leak when the toolbox is
open.

Close the toolbox when you are not actually using it, and things should
improve. Also: Close the Project Gallery and turn off WYSIWYG Fonts.

This leak will be fixed in the next update.

Cheers

Thanks, it's a relief to hear that the bug is known.

Your suggestions about keeping the toolbox closed etc. seem to work a little, though Word still crashes or hangs occasionally.

Some news about when the patch is expected? (weeks, months?) I think I'll role back to 2004 for the time being.

Thnx for the help!

A small update: I noticed that the problem remains, even when I don't use the toolbox at all (that is, when I'm only typing plain text).

Keeping the chart of the Activity Monitor open, I can see how the memory is gradually consumated...

The patch is currently in testing. It will be out as soon as it passes its
exams :) So: "Weeks" rather than "Months".
