Memory rrror upon opening documents

I work on a 1.25 GHzPowerbook with 1GB RAM installed. I constantly get
an error upon opening documents in Word X that reads "There is not
enough memory or disk space to complete this operation." I have
repaired disk permissions (and actually do that on a regular basis),
but that doesn't solve the problem. The problem actually seems to be
getting worse, as it happens more regularly. If I quit Word or restart,
I usually am able to open the document, but if I close and reopen (or
try to open additional document, the problem reoccurs. Also, if I am
able to open the document, and try to, say, add vertical scroll bars, I
get same error message.
Any advice would be helpful. Thx.

I had the same problem for a long time. I don't know if this will help
you, but when I stopped leaving my powerbook on for long idle periods,
the problem went away. Now, I shut it down whenever I don't need it for
more than 30 minutes or an hour, even if it means I have to restart 4
or 5 times a day.

This problem is very irritating! If it's what I think it is, it actually
has nothing to do with "Memory" or "Disk Space". The error is the generic
error that happens when Word is unable to write a file.

The cause is normally either disk space or memory. In this case, however,
it's actually a "File Handles" bug that's the problem. When Word opens a
document, it also opens a series of work files to hold the result of your
editing.

OS X seems to have a problem releasing files when an application closes
them. There is also a limit of 60 open files in Word X. When you try to
open number 61, the OS says "You can't have any more" and you get the error.

Going to Word>Preferences>Save and enabling "Always make backup copy" will
prevent the problem happening so soon.

When you finish work, instead of logging off, try Restarting your computer.
That causes OS X to release all open files and clean up all of the temporary
files. If you do both, you will rarely see the problem.

Upgrading to Word 2004 will remove the problem.

Hope this helps
