Memory usage grows

I have an application that seem to gradually increase the
memory usage as time passes. If I shut it down and open up
again, it starts out at a low level again. I determine the
memory usage by watching the "task manager".

Are there some issues that can cause this kind of behavior?

And are there something I should consider in preventing
this?

Why would you want to prevent it? Memory is there to be used - if your
applications aren't using it then it's just wasted and you may as well
remove it. You installed that amount of memory so that your applications
would perform well - rather than worrying about them using it, you should be
pleased that they are able to take full advantage of it.
