Menu bar problem

This is a problem I had once before but I can't remember how I solved
it. When MS Word (from the MS Office 2001 suite for Macintosh) is
open, the only items in the top menu bar which function are the Apple
Menu, Fonts, and the Help menu (but not Word Help). All the other
drop-down menus (File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, Tools, Table, Window
and Work) are inactive. They are not dimmed; they just won't open.

I have tried a couple of things to no avail:

1. I removed every MS Office file from both OSX and Classic MacOS 9.2.2
and reinstalled MS Office from the install CD. The problem persisted.

2. I networked to my wife's iMac whose MS Word works perfectly and
copied over all her MS Office files. The problem still persisted on my
G4.

Here is my system configuration:
PowerMac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet), Mac OS 9.2.2/OS X 10.3.7, 20GB HD with
8 to 10 GB free space; 703MB RAM; DSL connection; three external SCSI
peripherals (Agfa scanner, 270MB SyQuest drive, 100MB Zip drive)
connected to an Adaptec 2906 SCSI card; ethernet hub; two USB hubs;
three external storage hard drives; Que! firewire CD burner; four
printers. Many extensions.

And it needs to be said again: only rarely does re-installing Office fix
problems on the Mac, because the most common problems occur in files that
are not replaced. And the Remove Office tool on the installation CD must be
used. And the Trash emptied. And permissions repaired before and after.

Actually, since it's Word 2001, I'm assuming that means OS 9.x. And that
means rebuilding the desktop, not repairing permissions. It also means
using the Remove Office tool as downloaded from mactopia.com *not* from the
CD. (How soon they forget ;-).)

Many thanks to Beth Rosengard for pointing me to the solution for the
non-functioning drop-down menus in MS Word 2001. After rebuilding the
desktop, downloading the Remove Office tool to clean out all vestiges
of the faulty Office 2001 and then re-installing Office, and
downloading and installing the Office 2001 9.0.5 and 9.0.6 Updates --
all is now well again. Beth, you deserve another award!

Indeed, how quickly some of us feckless lot do forget, Beth. :-\

In fact, my highly developed forgetfulness technique was the reason I wrote,
and now maintain, "Bend Word to Your Will"...

And it hints that I should not use posting at
microsoft.public.mac.office.word as a means of getting a too-slow brain to
get into working mode in the morning...

My apologies to "tiger" and anyone else I confused.

Cheers,
Clive
