Menu "freeze" on screen and obstruct workspace

This problem is new in my experience with Word 2002:
toolbar menus become "frozen" on the screen, obscuring
whatever's behind them, and won't go away. Although I can
still enter keystrokes, I don't trust something else not
to go wrong, and usually end up exiting and restarting
Word instead. Seems more likely to happen with "complex"
documents (large tables, etc.). Any idea what's going on?
