Menus disappearing/off2003/winXP

I have a unique problem. I jsut bought a Dell laptop
with Win XP and Office 2003. When I click on any of the
menus in all office programs (word,excel, outlook..etc.)
it doesn't show any options. There is a faint shadow of
a box that appears with no text display. Weird. even on
the Internet explorer, all buttons work except the
favorites which shows the faint outline of a box and no
text. any help/solution will be greatly
appreciated...Dell's recommendation is to wipe out the
hard disk and reinstall everything.

Have you tried reinstalling Office using the maintenance method? Control
Panel->Add/remove Programs->Microsoft Office. Use the repair option.
