menus pop up/temp files don't vanish

I am experiencing a number of anomalies while I type in word documents: right
click mouse menus pop up unbidden, sometimes the cursor freezes while
something is happening in the background; if I bring up the task menu,
nothing seems to be happening. When I close the file it asks if I want to
replace Normal.dot. as changes have been made, and I find that the temporary
file has not vanished. I have tried deleting Normal.dot and restarting but
it does not change things.

Sometimes the screen goes blank but the computer has not switched off
because the fan is racing. It does not respond to the switch and I have to
pull out the power. It then boots up quite happily.
I am using Windows XP home, Office XP Pro and everything is totally up to
date.
What the ??? is happening?

It isn't a Word problem. It is more likely a nasty virus or Spyware or
possibly you have a hardware problem.

Thanks, Terry, it turned out to be a hardware problem - the fan on my
graphics card had failed and the computer was overheating. Much appreciated.
