Menus

I have spent a lot of time figuring out the ability to create drop down menu
using a combination of layers and behaviours. It look good but my biggest
concern is the fact that it requires absolute positioning. It seems to work
well in IE, Netscape and Firefox. Window sizing doesn't seem to be an issue
but my concern is text size. How many people use text size other than the
default settings in their browsers?

Any thoughts? Also, is using absolute positioning to be avoided at all
costs? I used to believe that but FP 2003 seems to handle is much better
now.

Anyone that can not read the text on a web page will either change the size (if they know how) or
move on to another site.

I agree. I am not trying to make the text illegible, but most drop down
menus I run across on the web will go out of whack with a simple text/font
size change in the brower. It is more prevalant on some sites than others. I
guess I'm trying to decide on the risks.

That is why I don't use DHTML menus.

My menu at www.rxs-enterprises.org is based on FrontPage layers and
behaviours (slightly modified - but the principle is the same).
You can see the original system at www.rxs-enterprises.org/browsers with
screen dumps from various browsers. (This version never went live).

Unmodified, it works in all browsers except Opera 4 and Opera 5, including
Netscape 4 (though display in Netscape 4 and 6 are not the best in the
world.)

The text can be resized; though display at the extremes leaves a lot to be
desired the (latest) menu remains functional. I resize text on some
websites (such as bt.com), but leave 99% of sites at the default. I know
two people who resize my site to a bigger font - it's something you have to
expect and design for, no matter how few need the facility.

Thanks, Ron. I took a look. It is a nice site. I'm going to experiment using
pictures in place of text for the menu items.
