if a field is a equeal to a certain value I want word to
insert a paragraph with merge field in it. i have been
succesful in merging the paragraph but the merge
information does not come over. Does anyone know how to
fix this?

Use a conditional field e.g.

{IF {Mergefield Name} = "Value" "Type this including this {Mergefield
fieldname}"}
