Merge Data from Access 2002 has data in blank spaces.

I am trying to merge data from Access 2002 into a Word letter. When I tell mailmerge to link a query (the criteria is for fields that are "IS NULL"), the fields come over to Word filled in with "12:00:00 AM". Why is this happening and how can I make it stop. The fields are all formatted for a short date.

Use the format function on the field in the query to force the date into a
date format without the time.

I used the format function on the field in the query to force the date into a date format without the time. This did not work. Although the field is formatted for a date, it is blank. It is only the blank ones that come over to word with "12:00:00 AM". My merge works on the primise that certain paragraphs are inserted into the letter depending on which fields are blank. With the time in the field, there are no blank fields, consequently, there are no paragraphs inserted into the letter. And for some reason, not only is the time in the blank fields, but if any of the fields already has a number in them, they are not brought over to word
