Merge field - ANSI file

Hello Everyone,

I've got a problem with merging fields from an external file.
This file is being produced in ANSI from an external program.

One field contains the EURO sign. When i open the file, this sign is
readable.
But when i merge the file in Word, this field isn't recognized. Instead of
the EURO sign, you'll see a little square.

When converting the file from ANSI to Unicode this problem doesn't occur.
But the users must be able to use the produced file without manual
converting it to Unicode.

I have spend lots of time trying and searching on the net, but with no luck.
Is there anyone who could help me out?
