Merge in HEADER problem

I have a merge written with some data in the header. All
appears well when I run the merge (Its an e-mail merge,
which sends the merged documents to differnt users as
attachments), and when the recipient gets the word
attacment and opens it, it looks fine.

But, when the recipient does a print preview, or tries to
print the document, all data in the header dissapears,
with just the merge coding showing. How can I fix this,
short of taking the data out of the header (which I really
don't want to do)?

This is a problem with a setting at the other end, I think.
And that person may be very happy that you tell them how to
change it :) It sounds to me as if the recipient has "Field
codes" activated in Tools/Options/Print

I checked that setting, and it is off on all the recipents
machines. Any other suggestions?

Hmmm. Very odd. When the merge runs, it should remove all the
merge fields. So in the attachment (are the recipients
viewing it in the Print Layout view?!) you should be seeing
either the data or the field codes. I can't understand how
this would be happening.

1. Which version of Word and Outlook(?) are we dealing with

2. Is the data you're showing in the Header also in the main
body of the document?

3. Have you tried sending it to yourself? And if you open the
attachment in Word, in Print Layout and press Alt+F9 do you
see the field codes, still?

The recipients get it in Print layout view.
1)Word and outlook 2002
2) The merged fields in the header are not in the main
body of the document
3) I tried what you suggested, and it showed a new set up
codes MERGEFIELD{xxxxxxx}

What does "new wet up codes" mean? How does what you see in
the merged attachment differ from the main merge document,
if you press Alt+F9 in that?

Actually, my guess is that there isn't any difference, and
that the mail merge isn't processing the fields in the
headers/footers. mergefields in headers/footers don't work
with catalog merges at all, and perhaps there are similar
problems when merging to email.

I see two possible approaches:

1. Merge to a new document, then break that up and email it.
I think Doug Robbins and possible Peter Jamieson have posted
macro code for that in this newsgroup.

2. Put these mergefields in the document and format them
with a particular character style, that has the attribute
"hidden" so that they aren't visible. Then use StyleRef
fields in the header to display the field content. Include
the \* CharFormat switch in the StyleRef fields to negate
the "hidden" formatting.
