merge percentages from excel to word

how do i keep the formatting when merging from excel to word
eg at the moment its transferring as...
excel 50%; $12.30
word .5 ; 12.3

hi doug, thanks for your time, however im finding it hard to understand that
website. from what i can tell its saying to put code into word... but all im
wanting to do is get numeric data from excel and put it in word keeping the
same formatting. either what i'm looking for is there and im blind or that
website isn't exactly what i needed.

The page is exactly what you need. Mail merge in Word 2002/3 uses only the
raw data from Excel. You must add formatting switches to your inserted
fields to achieve the results you require. Both types of field are covered
with examples of their use.
