Merge using external meraged Word documents

Why is it that in Word 97, that the merge example that
inserts merged letters from external word documents works
some of the time then other times I get file errors and
field calculation errors messages, but when I do a file
Save-AS everything starts working again? Could it be
that the file Save-As refreshes all of the links between
the merged documents

The easy question, first: Yes.

That's one possibility. The other is that the SaveAs is
clearing some memory and scratchfiles, giving Word more
"room" to work with.
